The color of Lonar Lake water is pink due to the formation of beta carotene pigment

Scientific water samples taken by Dr. Milind Shirbhate of Akola

Mumbai: Lonar Sarovar in Buldana district is under the jurisdiction of the Forest Department.  On June 9, the water of Lonar lake turned pink.  Accordingly, this water has been sampled in a scientific manner.  The samples were also sent to the National Institute of Environmental and Engineering Research (NERI) in Nagpur and Agarkar Research Institute in Pune for research, said Forest Minister Sanjay Rathore.

Lonar Lake is a meteorite lake and is one of the most unique lakes in the world.  It has high salinity.  Some experts believe that the water in the lake may have been formed by a combination of certain types of halo bacteria and algae.  Some experts believe that the water of Lonar Lake is turning pink due to the formation of beta carotene pigment by Dunaliella algae and Halo Bacteria.  There have been previous incidents of such color changes in alkaline lakes in Iran.  Inquiries are being made against this background and the water color has not changed due to any other artificial factor, said Forest Minister Rathore.

The Wildlife Department at Akola had sent Dr. Milind Shirbhate of Shankarlal Khandelwal College to Lonar to take samples of Lonar Lake water in a scientific manner.  They have collected pink water and soil samples and submitted them to the forest department.  The samples have been sent to Neeri Institute in Nagpur and Agarkar Research Institute in Pune through a special envoy to check the color change in the water.

Buldana is the only lake formed by a meteorite near the village of Lonar, 90 km southeast of the city.  The lake falls under the Lonar Sanctuary.  Lonar Lake is the third largest saltwater lake in the world formed by the hyper velocity meteorite impact of basalt rock.  It has an elevation of 464.63 meters above sea level and a depth of 150 meters.  It is oval in shape with an east-west diameter of 1787 meters and a north-south diameter of 1875 meters.
